In Person Lecture, Wednesday – Steven Weisfeld, Esteemed Professional Boxing Judge
Weisfeld brings that expertise forward in a way that both teaches and entertains. Referees, judges, maybe even trainers have enjoyed this lecture; he may be a judge of world renown, but he is also a world-renowned mensch. Known internationally, Steven’s work & reputation is respected & praised widely within professional boxing mise-en-scène.
Presently, Steve is found at ringside or just returning from a bout. His job; as one of three judges, is to score the bout and assign points to the boxers, based on punches that connect, defense, knockdowns, and other, more subjective measures. Sounds easy?
First he spent thousands of hours training to be a boxing judge in the 1980s & 1990s. Becoming a judge of prominence in an international sport, he was recently named to the NJ HALL OF FAME of Boxing. I’ve read articles about Steve, written by boxing insiders, some denote his decisive calls, while others speak to Steven’s dedication to the sport. All the articles and interviews have one thing in common, admiration of his scoring style, I guess you would say. The boxing world never met anyone like Steve. He teaches other colleague-judges, he volunteers for boxing charities, he’s been in the arena for the big ones, the trilogies, the announcer’s booth too (Hey why did HBO drop boxing?), the World Title bouts & all the while remaining unbiased. I couldn’t do that.
He has Judged approximately 2,250 professional bouts and approximately 125 world championships. He has been a judge for many famous names including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather and Riddick Bowe.
