There’s something magical about singing together and listening to music outdoors, followed by a service and community dinner.

32nd Annual Ridgewood Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony

Temple Israel &  JCC hosted the 32nd annual Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance ceremony on April 8. The evening included beautiful musical performances by the Heimat Quartet and the Interfaith Choir (under the direction of Dr. Tamara Freeman), various passages read by clergy members from Ridgewood’s houses of worship, a candlelighting ceremony by Holocaust survivors and children of survivors, and a presentation by TI member, Dr. Sylvia Flescher, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor; she spoke on “A Voice Rescued From the Ashes.” She shared her fascinating story about a wartime diary, which had been found in a ditch in Stanislavov, Poland, Sylvia’s father’s home town. After a trip to Europe, which included visits to concentration camps and Holocaust memorials, Sylvia shared her moving experiences with a friend. Through that conversation and a subsequent introduction, the diary was shared with Sylvia and it was soon discovered to belong to her father’s first cousin. Her father was the sole survivor of his entire family.
