On Thursday, February 22nd, at 8:00 p.m., Alain L. Sanders, Associate Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Saint Peter’s University, will discuss “The 2024 Political Landscape: Navigating Rapids” at Temple Israel of Ridgewood and on Zoom.

Professor Sanders’s talk will look at where things stand, as the country plunges into a volatile election featuring a criminally-indicted former president, an unpopular incumbent president, a dysfunctional House majority, two controversial major foreign wars, less-than-reliable election polling, hot button issues, and a hyper-polarized electorate.

Alain L. Sanders is Associate Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey, and a TV and radio political commentator on domestic and international political issues.

At Saint Peter’s University, Professor Sanders taught a wide variety of courses on American politics for 19 years, including classes on the presidency, Congress, the courts, constitutional law, campaigns and elections, and the mass media. He also served as the University’s pre-law adviser, as an internship adviser, and as a member of several University academic committees.

Prior to joining the Saint Peter’s University faculty, Professor Sanders was a professional journalist for 21 years. He worked as a senior reporter for TIME Magazine and wrote stories for every major news section of the magazine, including the Nation, World, and Law sections. He was one of the first reporters to secure and have published an exclusive in-depth interview with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court: Justice Lewis Powell. He was also a member of the original writing team for the pioneering, irreverent, humor-in-the-news Chronicles and Notebook sections, as well as a writer for TIME’s early Internet site.

Throughout his career as a journalist, professor, and now professor emeritus, Professor Sanders has appeared on numerous U.S. radio and television programs and news reports, locally and around the country, to discuss and analyze U.S. and international political developments. During his years at TIME Magazine, he was also a weekly radio commentator on American news developments for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Australian radio stations 2KY, 4BC and 2NC.

A lawyer, Professor Sanders practiced briefly with a New York City law firm early in his career. He holds an A.B. degree from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs and a J.D. degree from the Columbia University School of Law. He was born in Paris, France, and he is fluent in French.
